Lounge insulation - done.

Sent from my iPadTook us about a day and a half in total. Probably about the same left to do in the sun room and utility, which will be next weekend's job or I might take some days off this week to finish it.

Bossy assistant

Sent from my iPadNearly 20 weeks pregnant and still sweeping up. You can't tell some people. Must be the farmer in her. Anne did all the cutting of the kingspan as well, while I measured and then bashed it into place. She's a good lass, deep down. :)

Insulation above the steel

Sent from my iPadThis was a difficult bit to do, but we managed it in the end by cutting the king span into 3 lengths and packing in the spaces with off-cuts.

Insulation in lounge

Sent from my iPadThis is what happens when you give your missus the iPad to take a photo - you get videos.

Anne and I have spent the weekend putting insulation between the rafters in the lounge. It's one of the things we agreed with the builder that we could do before work began, in order to save some money on the build. We've still got the utility and kitchen extension/sun room to finish off, but can't crack on with that until the first fix electrics are done later in the week.

Roof update

I posted a message at the beginning of the week about the roof, saying that we hoped it would be done by the end of the week. Well, that is not going to happen and the revised date for completion of the roof is now next Fri, 4th Nov.

The reasons are that the initial timescale for the roofing part of the project was ambitious, due to Alex's misunderstanding around the stages involved in waterproofing the roof, based on the specific type of tiles we have. We've got a certain type of tile which looks as close to the old style of tile as possible, but they are not interlocking tiles. This means that the roofing job requires a coat of bitumen over the boards, felt, slats then tiling. The pitch of the roof dictates that we have to take these extra water proofing measures, because the likelihood of leaking is increased unless this is done. That's all fair enough I suppose, until the fella doing the bitumen doesn't turn up.

Anyway, here we are on Friday and apparently the bitumen is going on this afternoon. The lead valleys were in place yesterday and next week should be felting, slatting and tiling with the aim of completion by Fri. Windows are on order, so they should be in place shortly after and we can get on with the kitchen, which is now the priority.

The sparkies have also been today, to get the cables in place. Anne has done an amazing job at co-ordinating everything, but the poor lass is feeling a bit fed up now. I've booked December off work, literally, to try and do as much as I can in the final push.

Anyway, will post some pics over the weekend.

Week 11 - Keep Calm and Carry On

So this week is the start of week 11. The roofers have turned up to finish their job and by the end of the week, the hope is that we have the building roofed and tiled. This means we can then get going with the windows and making things water tight. The kitchen still has some supporting walls to take out - the main one being where the window is - the steels are all in place to support the weight above now, though, so that should be able to progress relatively quickly once they get on with it.

Alex and Simon turned up this morning, but only to collect some kit and head on to another job in Stamford Bridge. Their reason was that they would only get in the way of the roofers today, because the area where they are working is so tight. Hopefully they will be with us for the rest of the week from tomorrow, or Anne will go mental.

We reckon that we're about 3 weeks behind schedule at the moment, which pushes the project on to the beginning of December. That just takes us to the point of decoration. Christmas isn't quite cancelled yet, but it's getting close to 'squeaky bum time', as Sir Alex Ferguson might say.

Generally, tensions are running quite high in the Dransfield household at the moment and I have to remind myself to fall back on the words of Winston Churchill - "Keep calm and carry on".
